Tag & Title Registrations
New TN Residents Titling for First Time

For new residents titling a vehicle in Tennessee for the first time:

1) Vehicles in Hamilton County must pass a state-mandated emission test prior to registration. (Emission Test Information)
2) Please bring your out-of-state title and the odometer reading at time of purchase. If there is a lien, bring a copy of the title or an original or certified copy of the current tag receipt along with the name, address and zip code of the lien holder. Some States allow the owner to hold the title instead of the lien holder, so in this case the title is required.
3) If the title was issued in more than one name, both owners must appear unless the word "or" connects the names. If the word "and" connects the owners' name and only one person is able to visit the motor vehicle office, a power of attorney form must be executed designating the other owner to sign both names.

These services are offered at the Tag & Title Office at the Courthouse and the branch office off Bonny Oaks Drive. (Driving Directions)

If vehicle is being leased, you will need the following:

  • Original notarized power of attorney from lessor,
  • Lessor’s Tennessee sales tax leasing number,
  • Out of State registration in lessor’s name and
  • If vehicle is leased to more than one person, both parties will need to visit the motor vehicle office.
  • Need Photo Driver License or other acceptable photo I.D. Go Here for acceptable forms of I.D.

A one-time Power of Attorney form is available at the County Clerk's office, by calling 423/209-6525 or by printing the HTML version from our forms website if the owner cannot personally make application. Identification is required.

Also, when visiting the office please consider donating a dollar to the State Organ Donor Awareness Program.
