A “macro” is a command embedded in Excel.  These commands automate many steps in the Tax Wizard.

Since you should only open a file with macros from a trusted source, Excel protects you by asking if you wish to “enable macros” prior to opening the file.  Opening macros in this one file does not open macros in every file, and does not open your browser to viruses.

Here’s the key.  Excel comes with 3 security levels which the user may change at will.  The levels are high, medium and low.

Security Level

Explanation

High

Only digitally signed macros will be allowed to run.  All others are disabled.

Medium

The user chooses whether to enable macros on a file-by-file basis.  Only open files from sources you know.

Low

(Not recommended) Macros are enabled regardless of the source of the file.

The opening page of the Tax Wizard file contains help on changing your security level if needed.
